An example and the code could be built right into the "compose tips" node page thats already built into drupal. That way any user that wants to know how to activate the light box could just copy and paste the extra link out of the tips page where you would expect that sort of information to be.

Would be useful for my users anyway.

I've implemented this and checked it into CVS - should be available in the next dev release. I've added a new lightbox2 filter tip which doesn't actually do any filtering but displays a brief statement on rel="lightbox" with a more detailed description, including example code, on the compose tips page. You will need to enable this filter for each filter format you wish to have the help text visible for.
