This is practically a core feature in many of the popular forum packages and a must for large forums with numerous containers and multiple child forums.
The code posted at http//drupal.org/node/202542 works very well with the standard forum, can it be applied to the uieforum and if so, how?

Well, I suppose its possible alright. But in order to do so, UIEForum will have to be opened up to using themes (which I have intended for some time now) - I'll look into it for you.

Thank you for your quick response..
I am setting up a large forum structure which is very cumbersome to navigate without this feature.
Having spent a lot of time trying out other forum modules and packages, I settled on UIEForum as the best practical and fully integrated solution. I don't want to revert to the core forum just to have this, but it is a bit of a showstopper and so would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

I noticed in the issues listing an announcement for 'New version with bug fixes to be released'.
Would it be possible to include this feature into the new version?

I've made some theming changes in the new version (hasn't been released yet) but not enough to allow this kind of control. I don't know if I'll be opening it up THAT much either...

This version of UIE Forum is not supported anymore. The issue is closed for this reason.
Please upgrade to a supported version and feel free to reopen the issue on the new version if applicable.
