Newbie question... How to add content?

I want to add a "services" page, an "about us" page, etc. What is the best way to do so? These will be static pages.

You should really read the handbook, everything is explained there.

Here's how you do it though: Click on "Create content"->"Story". Here you create your about page or whichever "static" page you need. Before hitting "submit", click on "Menu settings" and enter a Title for the Menu link as well as a parent item in the navigation. Choose "Primary links" or "Navigation", whatever suits you the most. If you have the Path module activated, you can also enter a URL alias for the site under URL "path settings".

my problem is...

it says "Select Create content"

i don't see this. i'm looking at example.com/admin

am i looking in the wrong place?

The create content link is in the navigation menu, it's not part of the administration section. If you still can't find the link, type "/node/add" onto the end of your site's URL.
