I unpacked and uploaded Drupal to my host. By default register_globals is not enabled yet when trying to install the scripts I get an Incompatible Enviroment message and cannot continue. My host uses PHP ver 5.2.4.

There was a problem with the register_globals detection on some hosts, which has now been fixed in the 5.x branch (see issue http://drupal.org/node/209409). Please download and try the 5.x branch snapshot (http://drupal.org/drupal-5.x-dev).

Reopen this issue if that does not work for you.
