I don't usually mess with the technical bits, but I was refreshing my local XAMPP installation and noticed that settings.php doesn't end with "?>".

I thought maybe I'd messed up my copy somewhere. So I downloaded a fresh copy of Drupal, but it was the same.

I thought every PHP file starts with "" or "<?" and ends with "".

Why not this one?

While you can place a ?> at the end of the file it is not required and can cause problems if there are characters after it (including whitespace). The Drupal coding standard is to leave of the closing ?>.

Perplexing... seems to contrast with http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_syntax.asp

But OK. Strange things are everywhere. =)
