I have my UIE forum set to only allow editing to posts for a couple of minutes after posting (I would actually prefer to disallow editing altogether for normal users, but that doesn't seem possible). However, the edit link doesn't go away after this time - if you click it after timeout, you get an unfriendly access denied page instead.
Totally unrelated request - if it's an easy hack, can I also suggest disabling the time-between-posts limit for edits to a single post? Quite often users spot a typo straightaway and it would be nice if they could fix it without having to endure rude messages :)

daniel.hunt commentedThe edit links are _always_ displayed, but I suppose you're right. If you can't edit, you shouldn't see the link.
Fair point :)
And as for the other request. Hmmm .... :) The way I see it, an edit is a post submission, and should therefore be treated as such. But perhaps disabling the submission timeouts for edits would be another good idea.
Wow. You're full of good ideas aren't you?! :p
I'll look into it for you
