Is the 'OG: Group: Notification' field implemented

Description

The og table in the database has a field called 'notification' that is exposed as the Views field 'OG: Group: Notification' that has the description: "Displays yes if group automatically sends email notifications to subscribers". A group $node object also has the corresponding property 'og_notification'. However no actual functionality appears to be implemented for this field. I assume this functionality was planned but never written.

The reason why I am interested in this is because we are currently writing the specifications for the subscriptions_og module (http://drupal.org/project/subscriptions_og) which will move the email notification functionality from the organic groups module to the subscriptions module. We feel that the subscriptions_og module should allow the group manager to specify whether the group should subscribe new members automatically to receive email notifications.

Was the 'notification' field intentended to force users to receive emails or was it only meant to set a default for new users but then allow the user to change their notification option?

I have only fuzzy memory about this. best i can tell, this is a relic from an earlier design of notifications. it should be removed.

yes, i agree that if a site admin wants, he should allow his group admins to choose the default for his group (so much delegation!). this falls into the admin preferences discussion that we are having at http://drupal.org/node/192933
