Where can I find a step-by-step manual on how to install and setup Drupal? I’m looking for something more friendly for novices that the Drupal official handbook.

should help you out. The video http://www.lullabot.com/videocasts/installing-drupal-6 is for version 6.0 and the cookbook is provides a lot of tips for configuring it http://drupal.org/handbook/customization/tutorials/beginners-cookbook. Suggest you also install a test site on your desktop or laptop. I have found XAMPP very useful http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Also search on google, there may be others.

I don't suggest using Drupal 6 to build a production site yet, videocast for Drupal 5 installation is here: http://drupal.org/videocasts/installing-5
