First, I'd like to say thanks! I'm getting absolutely slaughtered by the competition, and the reason is my crappy forum. I'm really really glad that someone took flatforum and is updating it. I tried so many other ways of getting a good forum, and just ended up almost screwing up my website several times. That said, here are my issues:

1) Readme.txt is very difficult to read. Please see first screenshot.

2) I use Garland, and after following the readme.txt as carefully as I could, I found that my dark blue bar at the top had disappeared. This puts white text on a very light blue background, almost impossible to read. This condition persisted even after I removed all installation files. There is also white on white text in some areas, such as in the main Administer screen, "By task" is white on white and "By module" is ordinary.

3) I set the default view to flat instead of threaded, and it works, but all of my existing users have threaded set in their profiles. How to change this?

The first issue with the README.txt is you opened it with notepad. Try opening it with wordpad.

No idea on the other two issues.

I copy & pasted mine into MS Word and it's turns out in the right form. Easy to read and follow step by step...

Ok, issue 1) has to do with newlines and CRLF, it's done. Issue 2) was due to me accidentally deleting garland's images directory...found tons of errors in the logs about file not found. Durrr...

Issue 3) is still relevant, though. When migrating an existing site to advforum, you can set the default as flat, but if you used threaded as the default before, then all of your users will still see threaded and not flat. I don't know how to change this in the database.

Anyway, I love this mod! It's freaking awesome. Hurrah for Michelle!

Try the flatcomment module. I don't know if it retroactively sets existing comments to flat or not, but it's worth a shot. I recommend that module, anyway, to make comments truely flat in the db.

OK, I asked around on the main drupal forums, and nobody could tell me how to change all of the existing users to flat viewing mode. I can't find anything in the database in 'users' or 'forum' or 'content_type_forum' that would seem to fit. The forum related database entries are particularly hostile.

Anyone installing this module will need to complete this task, otherwise the threaded view will screw up the flatness. I suppose this isn't a showstopper, but it is annoying.

I'm using advforum in production, and I've already received several positive comments about how my forum has "really improved". So thanks again!

Did you try the flatcomment module? I haven't had time to look at it and see if it works retroactively.

Ah, sorry, yes. I did install flatcomment, but it didn't change the "Comment viewing options" which were set at "Threaded list - expanded" by default for all users. I have since changed this to "Flat list - expanded" but this only affects new users who register after the change.
