i am using the code found here on the Thickbox demo page and tweaking it as necessary but it just wont fire off the image....

the thickbox module is installed, the image path is correct and my head is sore from hitting it against a brick wall with this one... HELP

have a look a the non-working demo by clicking on the enlarge image icon.

I just checked the file's CHMOD is set to 775 which looks ok to me...

Maybe it's a javascript error. Have you checked that at your page end is a $closure?
If this is missing it causes javascript errors.

page.tpl.php :

    <?php print $closure; ?>

  </div> <!-- /page -->

</body>
</html>

no it is still pretty much the std garland page.tpl.php and with the exception of </div> <!-- /page --> its all there

When I use :

http://afterthemouse.com/files/pictures/Picture-18.jpg

I receive page not found. You must change the Picture to picture..... this is the error.

http://afterthemouse.com/files/pictures/picture-18.jpg is working.
