Hi,
I've spent the better part of the last couple hours researching this forum to identify some possible hosts for a soon to be released drupal site I have in development. I'm completely excited about the avid community and the principals on which drupal operates and can be utilized (open source). With the freedom open source affords comes varying levels of opinion about what is right or wrong.

Because of that I'm having a hard time distinguishing what the "community" feels are some good hosting providers vs. what is just a sales plug or affiliated endorsement. I'm looking for a VPS solution. Is there just a list somewhere of hosting companies either used and condoned by the community or drupal association?

There is no official list that I'm aware of, and I've been told there will not be one created any time soon (for legal reasons, perhaps). There are lots of unofficial "top ten" lists floating around google, but you'll be hard pressed to find any that aren't affiliate links or owned by the companies in question or their marketing staff, it's just the nature of the business. Much like real estate, almost every sale is brokered through one agent or another. Unlike real estate, however, there's no extra cost involved if you sign up via an affiliate, and if you look hard enough you'll find there are some honest recommendations out there.

You might want to check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ it's a little more balanced than most places.

Actually, have been on webhostingtalk and doing various web searches (landed on business.com directory of VPS providers http://www.business.com/directory/internet_and_online/web_hosting/virtua...) and just trying to triangulate in on companies with decent track record and critical mass. Was hoping to work a bit from the inside out (drupal - hosting companies) from the drupal community but appears have to do a little from the outside in (hosting companies - drupal) starting with hosting companies.

thanks again for the response, and fyi, i've been able to glean valuable information from your presence on this board...regarding questions to ask, things to look for, etc.
