Logintoboggan will add the login form to the page you're trying to view.
This 301 redirects you to the login page, instead.
I prefer it because it seems simpler to me to have one place to login for SEO but also so you can theme the page properly (e.g. if you have a specific login page that includes special copywriting and artwork)
Also, for some reason Drupal never lets me login except from the /user or /user/login page (e.g. not from the login block, not from logintoboggan's form, etc.) but that is a side issue. Not sure if everyone experiences that or just me on my local development server. This is more about the usability issue mentioned above.
I wouldn't care if Logintoboggan could do this; it's a tiny module I wrote to satisfy a need quickly and have reused it enough times that I thought I would share.
