Search box on page header not working

Description
On click of search button, the browser's status bar shows a new page is being loaded. But at the end the original page stays and no search result page appears.
I tried activating a search side block, same thing happened, no search result page shows.
I am using drupal5.3.

Amendment to my second statement "I tried activating a search side block...". It should be the opposite meaning. That is, on search from the side block, search result page shows up as its the normal way.
It is only the search box in header not working.
My apologies to any misled reading.
