Want to use Drupal for help system, but have a few questions

Hi all.

This would be my third Drupal site, so you would think I would know the answers by now but, I would essentially be trying to re-create a self-contained help system that was originally created using a bunch of HTML files.

Here are my concerns, for which I go into more detail below:

  1. There is a new requirement to translate the help into French
  2. I used Dreamweaver to create the help system using several library items (which are used to update several pages at once).
  3. I was thinking of changing the table of contents to a Drupal system of menus and replacing the index with tags
  4. In order to further consolidate information, I'd like one of the nodes to be a glossary page and use the information on that page to automatically populate a tool tip or javascript popup.

Now for the details...

Item 1

The first thing I am concerned about is implementation. I am guessing I would have a menu link at the top of the site that allows a user to switch between French and English. Would this be two separate sites, or one site with 2x the nodes?

Next, I don't actually speak French, and we are currently talking about several hundred help pages. I see there is a module called automated web translation workflow that allows nodes to be exported to XML, translated by a tool then refined by a human, then re-imported. I know someone that is capable of translating, but I would need to provide a tool for them so they are working on the raw text. Any ideas on this one?

If I were to do this right now, I'd just have the person use Dreamweaver (after using one of the HTML English to French translator tools) with the design tab open so it is text only.

Item 2

Next, what to do about information that appears over and over again, I used several (often embedded) templates to update several pages at the same time. For example, I would have several sections that make up a user guide repeated as individual help pages throughout the system.

How can I accomplish the same thing in Drupal and how painful or easy will this be?

Item 3

I have seen help pages implemented as menus on this site, so no real concern here unless someone knows an easier way to add a TOC?

For the index, does it make sense to just tag pages and have the large resulting list of tags be the equivalent of an index? Any suggestions here?

Item 4

I believe this will be quite possible, so I am just looking for suggestions here.

And to all who respond, THANKS!!!

Dan
