I've been reading about Xtemplate/PHPTemplate.

It seems the consensus is to use PHPTemplate at this point, however, after scanning through it, and looking at the documentation, it still makes no sense to me (and I use PHP/HTML/CSS). Xtemplate seems a bit more friendly.

I'm just wondering what are the advantages/disadvantages to using each "theme engine"?

Thanks

Xtemplate is easier to use, but PHPTemplate is much, much more powerful. With Xtemplate you can only alter the looks of the main page elements with basic HTML and CSS. With PHPtemplate you can do anything you want and at a much more granular level.

I find phpTemplate much easier to understand and work with. I've themed in both, but feel very limited with options in xtemplate. If you know php, then I say don't shy away from phpTemplate. The documentation may seem a bit thin, but there is much discussion on tricks and features in various threads.
