I made a post in the post-installation forum related to this but I am thinking that perhaps a new approach is necessary so let me outline the requirements and hopefully you all will have some recommendations about appropriate modules to use.

I would like the ability to extend the default usernode to collect more information. I believe this can be accomplished without any additional modules. However, I have the need at my organization to be able to search user profiles. All information collected in user profiles is public information so privacy is not a concern.

I would need a way for users to easily manage their own profiles as well as a way to search these profiles. Any recommendations?

Have you explored the advanced_profile module? I believe it works with usernode.
