Is it possible to add a left menu column? If so please explain how?
When Search 404 returns search results the left column is missing.
I am using the default Garland theme.
This is breaking the page layout I am trying to achieve.

Drupal leaves them out to reduce load on the server for 404 pages... you can over ride this behavior - check this thread http://drupal.org/node/129762
