menu links have big spacing between them on some themes

Can be checked with Amadou (maybe others), and IE6 (only)

take a look at the screenshot to understand what happens to the menu

erasing the following code fixes the problem

If there is no reason for the existence of these
I propose they be dropped
there is no reason for formatting output in a javascript script anyway
