.htaccess problem

hey i'm a newbie to drupal (and basically everything else...)

i'm using yahoo! hosting, which is OK but it doesn't allow the upload of ".htaccess" file
i don't mind NOT using those functionalities like cleanURLs, etc

my problem is: I store the drupal files at, say, "whatever_folder", when i go to www.mysite.com/whatever_folder it prompts me this:

"The following error must be resolved before you can continue the installation process:
register_globals is enabled. Drupal requires this configuration directive to be disabled. Your site may not be secure when register_globals is enabled. The PHP manual has instructions for how to change configuration settings. (Currently using PHP register globals Enabled ('1'))"

how can i go around the problem to install drupal??
