Hi,
I'm looking at setting up a website using Drupal. Can anyone suggest a good (and if possible well known/respected) hosting provider? Is a shared hosting package sufficient for Drupal to run smoothly?
Can anyone give any information about machinenetworks.co.uk I have been looking at their entry package http://www.machinenetworks.co.uk/webhosting/entry/. They seem to guarantee Drupal will work since you can install it using Fantastico.
So far I have tried going with a reputable and well known to me company (British Telecom) but they were unable to support Drupal.
I then contemplated 1and1.co.uk for a 128MB Virtual Private server, however was put off after setting up a test server at home (with Ubuntu Server and Apache/Mysql/PHP for Drupal) and it was using over 200MB after bootup alone.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Regards,
Jeff

I've been very pleased with http://shared.nethosted.co.uk/plans/. They are a small outfit but customer service has been outstanding. http://community.nethosted.co.uk/forum5_testimonials.html. Plus, you save 4p :-P
Can't really comment on machinenetworks since I've not used them but yes, looks like some level of Drupal support is provided at least. May be similar to nethosted. You could always ask them if they support all the http://drupal.org/requirements.
If you don't want to be managing your own server (or VPS) then a managed server or (managed) shared hosting is appealing. If it is well managed then shared hosting is fine. There can also be an issue with inter-accout security on a shared server; Nethosted now use phpsuexec to close most of the loopholes.

Very Happy with
Nativespace - www.nativespace.com. The quality of their support is absolutely top notch, and is why I still use them. I am developinga Drupal site on a shared server at the moment with no issues. The only thing they do not support is shell access for security reasons, but there are ways around this. Have also/am currently run sites on XOOPS, Joomla, SMF, and Gallery2 with them with no issues.
No connection, just a happy customer.
