Description

The existing handbook is licensed under CC 2.0 and I noticed recently that CC is now up to a 3.0 license. I haven't had time to look at what the differences are but wanted to put it out there and see if we should look at upgrading the license. I know it would be a large undertaking so we need to decide if it is worth pursuing and then decide how we would do it if needed.

I did a little digging to find out the differences; here's the page they created to explain the history, and here's the quick summary of the changes. Both are interesting reads.

It seems to me that the main reason for the update was so that other software projects can use the content. It's still legal mumbo-jumbo, but I don't see any harm in upgrading.

On a slightly unrelated side-note, Lawrence Lessig rocks! :P

upgrading would/will require a review to see if we in fact have rights to upgrade licenses

I am not a lawyer, but as far as I understand section 4.b of the license specifically ensures that ShareAlike licenses can be upgraded. But as I said: I'm not a lawyer.

Well, I guess the main question really is if we would need to get an OK to change the license from every contributor. If that's the case, then it isn't worth pursuing. I've posted this over in the DA legal group to get some official word one way or the other. http://groups.drupal.org/node/17903

Meh, I'm closing this issue since there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason nor any feedback from legal.
