The site was an extensive development project done by Lullabot, Achieve Internet, Treehouse, Advomatic and the Mansueto Team. Case studies, knowledge sharing and some fun stories to come shortly.

Are you using panels for the front page or are you styling purely through CSS?

Actually, we're not using panels anywhere on the site. We've used panels quite extensively on a number of projects in the past and have been very happy with it but we wanted to keep database load to an absolute minimum on this site due to volume, so we chose early on to forgo panels for this project.

The front page is actually built on a custom menu hook that uses a custom module called slot machine, written by Marco over at Advomatic, to allow producers to "slot" content to various positions on the page. This approach is also used for the sectional pages (Technology, Innovation, etc.).

I really hope someone can take the time to provide details on the modules used, obstacles encountered (and solutions), and the design process. Whenever I such great sites, I wonder how much is Drupal and how much is an exceptional design/programming team. I suspect its the latter.

I hope the developers/ designers take the time to write up a case study.

Drupal is merely a platform, an enabler. Without a good development and design team the website won't look that good! However without Drupal it would take a lot longer to develop a site and the upgrade path would be .... well, there wouldn't be one.
