As an admin, I tried making a regular user a certain role (the same role I am using Role Control on) through the regular Roles checkbox on their user account edit page (NOT using the special Role Control checkbox). After I checked the regular Roles checkbox, the user was not assigned to that role. Only when I checked their special Role Control checkbox were they added to that role.

If you need clarification, please let me know. I'm using the latest 5.x-1.x-dev (2008-Feb-05) build.

This is as designed because there is no way to deal with the situation where an admin removes the role but doesn't uncheck the Role Control checkbox. (The role gets re-added.) I made the decision to completely control the controlled role with the Role Control checkbox, so if you need to add someone to that role or remove them from it, you'll need to do it with the Role Control checkbox. (As the linked bug report notes, you can add them to a role elsewhere and the role control box will be checked.)
