08. Administering translations

As of Localizer version 3, interfaces for administering content translations and string translations have been added to the Administer › Content management menu items. These interfaces allow quick access to any string or content and provide an easy way to see which translations have already been done or have yet to be created.

Localizer strings translation
This interface provides a list of "strings" used in the site. Strings shown here may be for things like the site name, mission, and other site variables. There may also be strings associated with content types created after the site was originally created. Localizer gathers these kinds of names, descriptions, etc. together into this interface so that they can be translated.

Strings are simply presented in a list, with an expandable section under each string that shows the current equivalent for each language.

Localizer content translation
For sites where "parallel content" is needed in all available languages, the Localizer content translations interface provides an easy way to quickly single out translations that need to be done and also has convenient links to create/edit the translation for each language. There is also a link to disconnect or remove content from a group of translations. When the disconnect link is clicked, the content itself remains intact, but the association with other languages is broken.

Listing translations by criteria

Both the Localizer string translation interface and the Localizer content translation interface have a way to filter the list of translations by criteria. For example, say you are the Japanese translator for a site, and you need to find out what content may have been posted in English that needs to be translated. You would want to see all English content that does not have a translation in Japanese. To do this, you can simply select the appropriate filters and click "Search" to find just the types of strings you are looking for.

Note that multiple criteria can be selected by holding down the control (ctrl) key while clicking on the selections. Deselection is also done by holding down the control (ctrl) key while clicking on the selected item. In this was you can quite flexibly control the search criteria.

So, continuing the example where a search was done for English content without a Japanese translation, when the results are displayed, they will be a list of English content with a "translations" section below. The "translations" section can be opened and then all that has to be done is to click create for Japanese, which will immediately open up a Japanese translation screen for that content.

Note that appropriate privileges have been granted, links for edit, disconnect will also show up in this list when applicable.

In this way translations can be "managed" from one place.
