Status and error messages are cached for anonymous users. I've installed clean Drupal 6.0-rc4 without any additional modules and made only one change - set caching mode to 'Normal'. After that, I logout and registered as new user. Status message "Your password and further instructions have been sent to your e-mail address." was shown and still existed for any anonymous vistor. I've attached screenshot. I got this bug in FF, IE and Opera.

kndrUpdate: Message is gone, when new user activates his account but still exists when someone doesn't confirm his registration. You could try this on site http://drupal.inforion.pl
