XML Sitemaps only works for the last domain that the xmlsitemap settings were saved on. Otherwise the following output is generated when trying to view the siteamp.xml file for a different domain:

http://domain2.com/always1.0

For example, I save the settings for xmlsitemap on domain1.com, the default domain. I am able then to view http://domain1.com/sitemap.xml.

If I then type in http://domain2.com/sitemap.xml, I am given the output error: http://domain2.com/always1.0

Now, if I then go to http://domain2.com/admin/settings/xmlsitemap and save the settings, I am able to view the sitemap for domain2, but no longer for domain1

IIRC, this was something that XML Sitemap had to fix. If you've updated to the most recent version of XML Sitemap, then it may be that it was only fixed on the 6.x branch. But it's been a while since I've had anything to do with this, so I may've gotten things mixed up here :).
