I know there is a field to describe the gallery that shows up in the list of galleries (and sub-galleries) but is there somewhere where you could write a bit of a description of the gallery that shows up at the top of the contents of a gallery?

Yes, there's a patch for that, for 5.x-2.x-dev somewhere in the queue.
