It appears that when I upload a picture that is smaller than the large setting size, I get this error in the logs:

Imagecache scale action ID 3 failed. -or both-

Imagecache scale action ID 1 failed.
Imagecache scale action ID 3 failed.

Latest versions have ability to restrict minimum width and height of uploaded pictures. If you wish to prevent upscaling set these to your largest preset setting.
