It would be *really* nice to be able to attach multiple images to nodes. Ideally it would work similar to the way the Upload module does--in fact, it might be easier to just integrate Image Attach with the Upload module instead of rewriting this functionality.

If there is another module that does this--and only this--then I'm willing to consider that as well. Image Upload includes this function, but seems to include a few other redundant abilities and I'm running too low on memory to want to deal with that ATM.

Have you checked http://drupal.org/project/image_filter ?
It works a treat, once you've enabled it, under
Administer -> Input Formats -> (configure) -> [x] Image filter.
