I'm trying to install a 6.0 site from scratch, on a DreamHost account.
I have previously, successfully, installed and run 5.x sites on a different DreamHost account.
I create the MySQL db, I un-tar the 6.0 installation into the site directory, and I hit the site main URL.
At that point, the browser just hangs, with the wheel spinning. Nothing happens.
Load on the server machine isn't terribly bad (0.8-1.8, and it's a dual-CPU machine).
I also tried hitting site.com/install.php, with the same result -- no page, just spinning "waiting for ..." in the browser.
However, regular PHP scripts work fine. If I create a script that runs phpinfo(), I get a nice and quick reply back. PHP version is 4.4.8, API is CGI.
The only installation instructions for Drupal 6 seem to be a QuickTime movie, which spends WAY too much time on how to operate FTP and gzip, and no time at all on what could go wrong at this particular step. QuickTime also isn't exactly useful for text searches or indexing. I haven't been able to find any other installation information that's specific to 6.0 -- it's all 5.x stuff, which I've previously used with no problems on 5.x installs.
How can I even begin to debug this problem?

Which version
Which version of drupal 6 are you using? What if you change install.php with phpinfo() does it execute?
I'm installing 6.0, exactly
I'm installing 6.0, exactly as it says.
However, I found out how to make it work: when I change my hoster to use PHP 5.2.2 instead of 4.4.8, it works fine.
Wow, that worked. Thanks,
Wow, that worked.
Thanks, I've been going crazy trying to figure this out!
It works!
I should have googled for the solution three hours ago.
Thanks for the fix!
