I haven't upgraded to 6 yet, but i just came across a Drupal 6 site and noticed they had the drupal forum as homepage, on the first level. For example, www.site.com was the forum index, it wasn't diverting to www.site.org/forum, but www.site.com was the actual forum index.

is it possible to have the forum as your primary root page?

Sure, easy as pie. Under site configuration, site information, set the default front page to forum. Make sure you have the forum module enabled. Works in both 5.x and 6.
