The Related Links module is wonderful! I'm using it in the News section of my site, with Discovered links, and it does a great job of pulling related news articles plus certain types of relevant user-related and editor-related content.

Right now Related Links only looks at about 500 nodes, but we're about to bring our archive of news articles into the Drupal site. This adds 5,000 text nodes (on average maybe 1,000 words each), all of which have taxonomy terms.

Should worry about performance? Anything I can do to minimize problems?

Thanks!

Discovered links are calculated only the first time that a node is displayed (and regenerated periodically). So, it should be fine.
