What about this module? Is it under active development? If not, i will try to Port it to D6, it would be a nice "learning by doing" thing for me to understand module-dev in Drupal.
I've got many Ideas for the Jabber module an i think Jabber is a little bit under-represented in Drupal right now...

I would love to see this working in D6. I would think there'd be more interest now that jabber.org is running on Drupal too.

I would love Jabber/Drupal integration.
Maybe jabber.org people have ideas for it.

FYI: There is an xmpp module which provides some integration (xmpp is the protocol behind jabber), although it is not really working yet. And I will be working soon on adding xmpp server functionality using the services module based on the forementioned xmpp module.

After I have read the Service-Handbook i think a combination of the unmaintained (?) xmpp module and the service api is the best way to manage everything related to jabber/xmpp in Drupal. I dunno where to start - first collect some ideas about what the NEW jabber/xmpp module should contain and then start the server-implementaion with services module...
some ideas:
- of course, a profile-field for the users jabber adress is essential
- implementation of the notice module - give users the ability to chose whether to get informed/noticed by email or by jabber/xmpp
- a simple chat-block for users that have specified an jabber-id like in google mail
- the ability for users with specified jabber-id to directly send messages from the drupal site to others with specified jabber-id
- a status bot for displaying status and status-message in profile (should be a section in the server-part)

An XMPP / Jabber integration module with an integrated chat client (xwchat) for Drupal 6 already exists. It's at this page, http://drupal.org/project/xmppclient.

would anyone need a followup on the project there is a new maintainer and code at http://drupal.org/project/xmpp_server
