on changing roles, user is unsubscribed from all subscribed email lists

When the user's role is changed by the admin from the user admin page (admin/user/user), the user is somehow unsubscribed from all lists. Trying to isolate the problem, will provide more info and hopefully a solution once I find it.

This is NOT triggered, however, when the role change is made on the individual user's edit account page by the admin.
