I tried a fresh installation and got this error(^ topic). On the same hosting drupal 5.7, joomla, phpbb, smf, phorum, wordpress running without poblems. Os & Settings : red hat, cpanel, php5, mysql5, php: +mysql, +mysqli, +safe mode...
I try to install drupal on the root directory.

After trying 3. installation I got this error :

ok after 4. try I could finish installation, the only change was choosing a table_prefix.
table_prefix was my solution too
A million thank yous for posting your solution! I had the same problem installing Drupal 6.6 on a different webhost than I was used to and ran into this. Choosing a table_prefix fixed it. Go figure.
ok, but why?
This worked for me too with 6.8, but why is this random hack required now with 6.8?
