I installed Drupal 6 without any problems, yet the taxonomy module doesn't appear in the core modules list, so I can't enable it (and thus can't enable Forums). A taxonomy folder appears under modules on the server with 755 permissions.

You might try uploading the taxonomy module again. Perhaps it was interrupted or corrupted? The folder should not be empty.

It should be in the core - optional list. Is there a taxonomy folder in the drupal6/modules folder?

Yes, the folder is there and it has 7 files. I re-uploaded and still, taxonomy doesn't appear in module options.

I'll try a second test installation.

I made a second fresh installation on Dreamhost and taxonomy appeared just fine. Weird.

I can only guess, but perhaps you had a problem with your ftp client or network. I think it is related more to my ISP, but I regularly have weird problems that no one else seems to have when I upload some files.
