I wish I could be more specific about the problem I'm having... let me tell you what I've tried.

  1. Installed the paging module and enabled it at admin/build/modules (without the XML site map option)
  2. went to /admin/settings/paging and checked the box for the desired content type
  3. went to /admin/settings/filters and enabled the paging filter for each input format, and made sure it had the highest weight.
  4. edited a node of the target content type and added the <!--pagebreak--> markup to the page, and saved it.
  5. you can see at http://spmagtest.com/node/20991 that the pagebreak code appears in the HTML, but no pagination occurs.
  6. also tried using both kinds of automatic paging, with no results.

Help? :-(

Do you have HTML corrector module installed and is that filter also enabled?

No, I am not using HTML corrector. I wound up making my own version of the module which works on my site. I have not had the time to compare it to the latest dev version and contribute the changes, but I plan to do that in the near future... when we upgrade to Drupal 6, if not before! ;-) Thanks, sun.
