So I am a Drupal newbie and have been playing with drupal this whole past weekend and have been able to get all the basic stuff straight - CCK, Views, Panels etc.. My aim is to use Drupal to create an Orkut like website where users can - 0) Register 1) Create profile 2) Search for other users 3) Add them to friends list 4) Send Private or public messages.

I am sure I am not the first one to try building a social networking website using Drupal, so if there is anyone who wants to share their knowledge... it will be great.

Reason I an use this help badly is because I am looking to have the first version of website ready and migrated to prod by this weekend. (talk about ambition!!)

I went through commnity modules and there are some modules that I have found could help me in getting where I want. I am going to add and try some of those modules tonight.

However, I wanted to check and see if experts' have some advice. Are there some modules that can help me create the social networking website faster?

Thanks in Advance.

Drupal is a "content management system", but not yet a "Community management system".
I think that in a near future, Drupal will take this path, but it is not there yet.

A community does not need to have hundreds of thousands users to be successful. Myspace, Facebook, Hyves are profit orientated.
All their features are in place to catch members and to make profit out of them.

teamsugar has built a successful networking community on drupal, and fastcompany.com is doing it right now...

search drupal for tutorials from those two sites and youll see how they use simple modules like Organic Groups and other stuff (views, taxonomies, etc) and just theme it all to create the look and feel...

i mean, come on - social networking sites are all just advanced bulletin boards...drupal can actually manage the underlying content.

friend,

Hi Zilla,

Can you take me through this? I need to do the same thing.

Thanks.

there are already TONS of groups and discussions about using drupal for social networking - and while i can't remember it right now, there are a few awesome threads outlining modules to use and simple cookbooks for putting it together...
