Just a suggestion, but I'd like to see this forum topic split into Services Wanted and Services Offered. I'm a service provider, and I've found this topic to be bogged down with services offered. Not that that's a bad thing. But those posts tend to get bumped over and over again and the people looking for help get pushed down quickly.

Thoughts?

But let me play the devils advocate.

Some people may instead of posting new gigs, may just end up surfing the services offered section, and not get paired up with the best providers.

I think that's just as likely to happen with the current setup.

Hi, I agree with the services offered section.

Unfortunately threads get bumped to the top when edited instead of only when replied to (one of my threads seems to jump to the top when I add or edit information in the post without creating new replies.)

Even if a thread was bumped to the top with new threads, to avoid shameless self promotion, should there be a time limit between creating new replies (just for bumping the thread instead of answering a client query) or creating new threads for more or less the same service? How does 2 weeks sound?

Yeah +1, suppliers that are looking for jobs will certainly sniff around the supplier forum from time to time, but for me I generally just watch this place via an RSS feed, which means constantly having to separate the wheat from the chaff, which is just time-wasting really.

I can't see this being a bad thing. Best idea is to submit this to the Drupal.org webmasters issue queue. I'd link to it if I could remember where it is... :)

While I'm not sure that we've reached the point that action needs to be taken, I am sure that this time will come.

Though I can't find any mention of a suggestion such as splitting this forum into 'service requests' and 'service offers', I did find these two issues:

What are the pro's and con's of splitting vs. not? Maybe the discussion should take place in the issues, and not here?

criznach’s picture

Who looks at the issue queue besides the drupal.org webmasters?

criznach’s picture

Nevermind. I was probably asking for it by posting that. I should be looking at the issue queue if I'm raising the issue.

@criznach:
I was not trying to say that raising the topic here was a bad thing (on the contrary, i was very pleased that you brought it up)... I only meant that if there was to be any action, then the issue queue is where the convincing will need to be done (i think).

For now the demand for Drupal Service Providers exceeds the supply of 'immediately available' Drupal service providers on the forums.

A quick fix for now (until there really is a lot of spam, a couple of weekly hit and runs don't really count as spam) would be for service providers to prefix their posts.

eg.

  • WTS (Want to Sell, MMORPG Gamers should be very familiar with the WTS prefix) Installation/Content/Module Building/Theme Building Services
  • WTP (Want To Provide) Installations/Content/Module Building/Theme Building Services

I was about to say the same thing... but with easier to remember prefixes ;)

how about just 'OFFERED' for services offered, and normal for the rest?

zilla’s picture

but it needs to be communicated - like on the home page of drupal.org!

i'm in one association where we've all agree to a standard for such terms on a huge and busy listserv - nobody skips this step (insert BUS for business related, TECH for tech related and so on - in subject line, before subject) - amazingly well respected and simple.

some could work here, simply: NEED and HAVE or something equally short and simple (WANTED/OFFERED)...

...but again, unless there's a huge message - or at **least*** a very sticky post up top, it will be ignored..

criznach’s picture

Yes, I can see the value in post prefixing, but that doesn't prevent the $20 drupal install providers who ask their clients to post a thank you to the thread from staying in the top 20 posts for 6 months to a year. I could do the same but I'd rather not spam this forum because I check it daily (or hourly) for new projects and RFPs.

SP (Service Provider/Services Provided) should be a short and easy to understand prefix (till a new forum is added which would be infinitely more desirable in the near future)

New forum users would quickly understand that SP stands for Service Providers/Services Provided. (If a more easier to understand alternative abbreviation/prefix is out there, that can be used instead)

If the post title was prefixed with SP or WTS, it would be much more easier to differentiate which posts are from the service buyers/RFPS and which posts aren't.
