I want to start learning drupal 6.0 by using the handbook Apress Pro Drupal Development handbook for drupal 5.0

Does this seem like a good idea?

If you want to learn how how to install and operate Drupal so you can create a site and learn how to install modules/themes etc, this isn't the book for you (yet). There are other books for that.

If you want to create your own modules and themes, then yes this book is just what you need. It will still be mostly relevant to Drupal 6, but you'll need to familiarise yourself with the documentation explaining the differences:

One other thing to add to styro's comment is if you're working off of an earlier version of Drupal documentation is that you can use modules like Deadwood (almost fully automated conversion between versions of Drupal) and Coder (manual conversion and coding standards inspector) on older module and theme versions and get a feel for the most common differences between them. For most coding, it boils down to a few minor adjustments.

I would also suggest getting the Drupal 6 verison of Pro Drupal Development. The E-book version is a little cheaper and you get the added benefit of inline searching (great for reference).

Cheers,
Chris
