Upgrading 4.x to 6.x

I'm right smack in the middle of a somewhat painful upgrade of a site from 4.5 to 5.7. why not D6? Not all the modules I need are done, and I have to get this work done today.

This is the second site I've taken up on such a big leap for a client. My direct leap from 4.5 to 5.2 worked fine on one site, minus the need to entirely overhaul the xtemplate based theme and built it in phptemplate.

This site's phptemplate based theme worked just fine, but the upgrade on the tables has failed pretty miserably when doing the leap in a single bound. I started patching up problems by hand until I started finding that the node revisions had been associated incorrectly.

Now I'm going from 4.5 to 4.6.x to 4.7.x to 5.7. I've just finished the 4.5 to 4.6.11 upgrade and that went well once I added the 'severity' field to the watchdog table manually, as my DB predated that field, but the update script assumed the field was there and failed right out of the gate.

I found your question as I was back on d.o looking for a 4.7 tar file.

I have no idea if the step by step route will work, but so far it is better than going in a single bound. I'd say suck it up and go one step at a time.

How did it go? Did you need to upgrade first to 5.x and then 6.x or does the 6.x version handle upgrading from 4.x directly?
