What do you mean, will not
What do you mean, will not allow you more than 8Mb of memory. Have you triied adding the change for the amount of memory to your .htaccess, or you sites settings.php file.

Will give you nothing but trouble
A PHP memory limit of only 8MB will very likely continue to frustrate you. It will limit the number of modules you can use, and also some will not work at all, even when combining them with only a few others.
It can also influence the number of blocks you can display simultaneously. A PHP memory limit of only 8MB was the original reason why I shifted away from b-one.

I solve it
I add
ini_set('memory_limit','32M');
to index.php and it's working great now.

Best not to do this in index.php
As Gordon suggested, it's much better to make this change in your .htaccess file.
You will want to add a line
php_value memory_limit 32M
in whichever of "IfModule mod_php4" or "IfModule sapi_apache2" applies to you.
