andremolnar commentedwebfm 1.8 (ONE point Eight) was a security release - so that part of the message seems right - if you are using a version less than 1.8 it should have been upgraded.
2.8 was tagged as a bug fix release.
I think there may be a bug with the update_status module. Which version of update_status are you using?

paulrooney commentedClicking "Check manually" for updates cleared the error this time. I _had_ done this a few times right after installing 5.x-2.8 (without clearing the error). If no-one else has run into this, perhaps there was something odd at my end. Please let me know if I can provide any other info. Thanks!

andremolnar commentedActually I did notice that the update service at Drupal.org didn't have the 2.8 updated listed until this morning. This is likely the source of the problem. i.e. for a while you had a 2.8 version while updates.drupal.org was saying that only 2.7 existed. I guess it thought it would be cautious and give a severe warning since it didn't know any better.

I'm going to close this. The issue lies with update status module and not webfm. But, I am going to do a bit more investigation to familiarize myself with update status' guts.
*NOTE*
It is always wise to take such security warnings seriously. Don't let this be a boy who cried wolf story. If status update says there is an issue believe that it is an issue until there is strong evidence to to the contrary.
