I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to organise the modules section of the site.

It strikes me that when a new (or even semi-experienced) user is looking for modules:

  • It's often very hard to tie down the exact module or plugin you require...
  • When you do go searching through the Modules section it's pretty much a hit or miss as to whether or not you'll find what you require...

...not because the module or plugin doesn't exist, more likely because on a huge amount of the modules/plugins the descriptions are ambiguous or subjective and quite often don't give a real-world example of how it may be used.

Perhaps a 'RealWorld Example' field should be mandatory on all contribs so that people searching for functionality can process it in their brain and go, "Eureka, that's exactly what I'm looking for or at the very least I could adapt it to fit my requirements..."

Just kinda wondering if others are experiencing the same...

    I agree completely.

Matter of fact, just yesterday I listed all the modules alphabetically and read through each one to make sure I wasn't missing something. I found a lot of interesting modules that I wouldn't have found any other way. I have to say, the organization of the modules is probably the thing I like least about drupal.org.
I can't (unless I'm missing something) even search through just the modules. If I do a search, I'm searching everything. What if I just want to find modules that have something to do with my idea?

I like your Real World Example idea. A lot of modules do that. Some of them don't. It's definitely useful when they do.
