Hi-

So I want to make a website that would foster community involvement and allow for an ever-growing library of information pertaining to saltwater fish & aquariums. Basically, a place for people to find & post everything saltwater related.

Requirements for a name

  1. Open domain name, eg: something.net, .com, .org
  2. Short - one or two words
  3. Unique - memorable

I've been racking my brain, but nothing that I've came up with has really been exciting. So I thought that I'd ask here =]

Best,

Matthew

I find that simple is usually better than exciting. Something simple means that it's easier for people to remember your site's name, and if it's simple enough then you don't restrict yourself in the scope of your site. The great difficulty is in finding a simple domain name that isn't already taken.

just checked these:

fishiness.net
fishiness.org
lotsafish.net
lotsafish.org
seaspot.net
seaspot.org
fishspot.org
morefish.net
fishtalk.org
seatalk.org

ooo... seaspot.. i like. I'm a fan of .org for community sites, I'm not sure why, but that TLD is just way more appealing for me. I'm glad they don't actually say "only for non-profits".

I like.. I must say - I'm extremely surprised by the response here. I thought no one would have any ideas (or care to comment).

Naming a site is always the hardest part for me. How do you decide on your names? Are they pre-defined (as in a group's name, or business title), or do you more often figure out something unique?

I'm thinking of a 'modern' and 'clean' lowercase title in thick letters. If that helps anyone. I really like this theme: Blix (http://drupal.org/project/blix). You can see it live at http://dmedia.ucsc.edu/~mruno/drupal/ (but the server is down right now?). I'm going to use it in a modified form for the site.

Best,

Matthew

i feel the best time to think of names is when you aren't trying to think of names. everyone is different, but the names that have stuck have been thought of on a whim, and it just felt right. The last one that was developed, Sonic Heart, took a weeks of frustrated brainstorming, only to think it during a conversation about something else...

fishypedia
fishpedia
aquabrarian
aquariumbria

... i haven't checked any of those btw. My advice would be to focus more on aquarium type titles, as fish is a more general topic; fishermen are much different than aquarium owners, for example.

I recommend using name spinner scripts like this one when you are really stuck :P

A quick check showed that:

aquapedia
piscatory
aquaculture
sea-aquarium
sea-aquariums

were either free for all TLDs or for the .org TLD :)

Have fun :P

Aquaculture.org!! WOW!! That's... perfect! I can't believe it's not been taken.

I'm also going to page through the Igor guide to figuring names.

Best,

Matthew

I just checked at GoDaddy and it seems that aquaculture.org/com/net is already taken. It was a good idea though! =]

aquatalk
dorsalfin
openaquarium
wildaquarium

Hope one of these does the job :)

Aquapedia.org seems to fit with the intent of the site well. It's supposed to eventually be an encyclopedic database of saltwater coral & fish information.

...and it's not registered.

I'd like to say again - wow! Thanks for all the responses! I've been really surprised at all the help. I guess it shows you how wonderful the user-base for Drupal really is!

http://wordlab.com a site dedicated to the sort of request you are making. 24,047 suggestions waiting for you.

I stopped by once to glance at the names - now I go back to read the articles. Great stuff.

And if you want to do it the way the pros do it:

+1 for blubblubblub.com

it's cool but i feel like i'd get lost typing the repetitive letters, like blubblublub would be incorrect but look similar... :(

that was my first thought.

Put your money where your mouth is!

Here's a few ideas that struck me: I've left spaces between the words as I find that sort of thing better for generating further ideas.

Salty Bubbles
Salt In The Wound
MurMan (Or Merman)
PH Ballence
The Little Castle (Didn't your first tank have one)
Scale The Walls (groan)
Gillfull
Bob Bob Bob...

freyquency’s picture

it's ph balance, just to avoid over excitement if it's available... :)

Well spotted.
