I am trying to decide wether to use XAMPP or WAMP as my test site environment what do you prefer and which is the easiest to use and install and works the best with drupal?

Hope someone can recommend one of them since I can't decide which one to use and are new to drupal but not html and php.

One other thing I have been thinking about is the themes that one can choose from, I have found one but would like to make some changes to the theme like colors etc do you do that directly in the panel or can you open the theme css in for example dreamweaver and modify it from there?

XAMPP or WAMP themselves really aren't much differen't , XAMPP comes with Perl, hence the extra P, if you are going to use Perl go with XAMPP, if Perl isn't part of your agenda then go with WAMP.

I'd go with the one I feel is best supported by the community so that when you have OS specific questions you can get them answered in the proper forums.

drupal css is not altered in a panel, you alter it using a text editor, If you choose to use dreamweaver you shold be ok.

I've been using Xampp for a couple of years and it works great. I've got multiple drupal installations, plus Moodle so that I can develop e-learning solutions quickly. I use Ultra-Edit to modify files, but you could use anything. Dreamweaver would seem to be overkill, but whatever you're comfortable in.

I bundle a pre-configured drupal/moodle xampp install for some of my clients to play with. I simply create a .rar file so that if/when they kill it, they simply over-write and are good to go.

However as had been previously mentioned, you could you wamp and do all of this as well. Oh, and if you're an OSX user, Mamp is a good bet as well.

I guess maybee XAMPP is better for me then, it feels that there are more people that are using it here som I can get some help when I get into trouble...!

i've had xampp running for years and have yet to get into trouble with it. just as simple as hitting start and stop.

I much prefer WAMP. For me, it's just nicer to work with. (Of course, I don't do anything 'advanced' with it, just everyday site-building/testing tasks.)

Is there a difference in speed? cause i use xampp and sometimes there is lag when opening my local site. its not instantenous.

XAMPP is good for development and learn
LAMP is good performance
WAMP smells like advanced XAMPP :D

Why not Zend community Server with Eclipse :). Sorry. I had to throw that in. I used to use XAMPP with Netbeans but when I moved to Win 7, I also moved to Eclipse for compatibility. I really like the entire setup a lot more. Zend Community server was a lot easier to configure than XAMPP. Literally, it was a couple of clicks and it was up and running. The Windows installer rocks.

I'm on Mac/Ubuntu and I am upping my WIndows usage. I had not heard of ZCS, but I have heard of zend. I'm checking it out now. Any additional thoughts on using ZCS?

Why don't you try Visual-AMP, Or Visual-NMP, It is like the IIS.
