I'm having trouble with timezones, and I thought it might be that that events are being displayed with the events time zone instead of the sitewide timezone, so I tried to switch. I go to admin/settings/event/timezone and change it to "Use the sitewide time zone" and click submit - but each time I do, it switches back to "Use the event's time zone"

Is there some trick to changing it?

Same problem here, it seems to be holding but the setting when I change it. However, it just doesn't have the correct radio button ticked for what it is currently set at. Also using 5.x-1.0.

Event for Drupal 8 is unrelated to older versions. If an issue similar to this one exists, please open a new issue with the 8.x branch.
