Issue Summary
I am not sure how to fix this.... The image is aligned correctly in IE but not in every browser, e.g. it doesn't work in firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; ru; rv:1.8.1.8) Gecko/20071004 Iceweasel/2.0.0.8 )

Additional comment: may be fixing this bug is not very vital. I've checked three latest versions of browsers under windows: FF, Opera, IE and even Safari. All three understand vertical-alignment:middle for the image. Perhaps, it is a quirk only of the linux version. Perhaps, we could close this bug .

I did not encounter this problem with Firefox on Linux.
I have tested it in firefox on linux (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080207 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.12), the behavior is OK & CORRECT. I tried to modify the value to 'top' or 'bottom', the browser 'responded' to it correctly too. You may try this to check how your browser will render accordingly.
