As of Version 5.x-2.x of Pathauto, you must use PHP4.4.x or PHP5.1.x
or above. Pathauto5.x-2.x has improvements for localization which
require the use of new constructs only available in those versions.

Must I use PHP4.4.x, even if I don't use the improvement. I have a stand English only site.

No, that is no longer valid and I just forgot to remove it from the README.txt

Here is a patch that does that - applied to 5.x-2 and 6.x
