Does not display taxonomy, times out with "white screen"

Description
The "Directory" module does not work at all on (a) mid-sized sites (>20k nodes) and (b) large vocabularies (> a few hundred terms). Depending on the configured timeouts, it hogs all cpu ressouces for a few seconds or minutes and then dies (times out) with a white screen of death (no error message given).
It starts to work _only_ if admin/settings/directory is configured to one or a few very small vocabularies. Most probably this is by design (similar things happen with other modules like "Sitemap" oder "Sitemenu" on large sites), but since these limitations are not documented, I'm considering it a critical bug.
The "Sitemenu" module does some internal caching; maybe this would be possible for "Directory" module, also?
